 Music Curriculum Intent Statement

At Our Lady and St Joseph Catholic Primary School, music is a vital part of our commitment to “Searching faithfully for excellence.” Rooted in our gospel values of love, respect, stewardship, honesty, hope, justice, and forgiveness, the Music curriculum nurtures pupils’ creativity, emotional expression, and cultural appreciation. Through engaging, skills-based learning inspired by the Sparkyard Music Curriculum, we aim to inspire every child to discover their musical potential, fostering confidence, resilience, and a lifelong love of music.

Key Aims
Our Music curriculum seeks to:
  • Develop pupils’ fundamental musical skills including listening, singing, playing instruments, composing, and performing.
  • Build a secure understanding of key musical concepts and themes that are revisited and deepened progressively across Key Stage 1 and 2.
  • Encourage pupils to appreciate a wide range of musical styles and cultural traditions, broadening their understanding of the world and promoting inclusion and respect.
  • Support pupils in expressing themselves creatively and collaboratively, enhancing communication skills and self-confidence.
  • Ensure that music learning is accessible and engaging for all pupils, including those with SEND, through carefully sequenced lessons and adapted activities.
  • Offer the flexibility of additional curriculum time in school for pupils with a particular aptitude or interest in music to allow them to develop their talents.
  • Offer opportunities to take part in local and national music events such as ‘Young Voices’ and ‘Big String’ – performing with others in larger groups.
Content and Skills
Pupils will develop:
  • A strong foundation in musical vocabulary and concepts such as rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, dynamics, and structure.
  • Practical skills in singing and playing tuned and untuned instruments, supported by high-quality resources aligned to the National Curriculum.
  • The ability to compose and improvise music, linking ideas and building increasingly complex musical “schemata.”
  • Listening skills to identify styles, instruments, and musical features, enhancing critical thinking and cultural literacy.
  • Confidence in performing individually and in groups, fostering teamwork and leadership.
Progression
Learning is carefully sequenced, ensuring pupils master essential knowledge and skills before progressing. Musical concepts are introduced and revisited through progressively challenging activities each term, allowing pupils to consolidate learning and build fluency. This approach addresses previous inspection feedback by providing clear curriculum intent and reducing gaps in knowledge. Teachers use formative assessments to tailor lessons, ensuring tasks are well matched to pupils’ needs and maintaining high ambition for all learners.

Wider Impact
Music at Our Lady and St Joseph’s enriches pupils’ personal development and well-being, supporting emotional expression and resilience. It cultivates respect for diversity by exposing pupils to different cultures and musical traditions, aligning with our school priority to broaden cultural understanding. Participation in music strengthens communication, concentration, and collaboration skills, preparing pupils for future learning and life beyond school. Our curriculum fosters a sense of belonging and community, reflecting our Catholic ethos and commitment to nurturing the whole child as a responsible, respectful, and active citizen.
Through our Music curriculum, we aspire to empower every pupil to experience the joy of music, build their confidence and creativity, and develop a deep appreciation of the art form that will stay with them throughout their lives.
